What does split payment mean?
Split payment is a feature in your POS system (till system) that lets you divide the payment for a bill into several parts. Either different people in the party each pay their share, or the same person wants to pay with several different payment methods – for example some in cash and the rest by card.
For many restaurants and cafés it is completely normal for guests to want to split the payment – especially with larger parties or informal lunches where guests pay for their own share. Split payment differs from, for example, joint payment or partial payment in that it focuses on dividing the amount itself, not necessarily on who pays what. You can read more about the difference by clicking these words: Joint payment and Partial payment
Example: Imagine four guests have eaten together, and the total bill is €120. They want to split the bill evenly, but one of them only has €15 in cash, and the rest want to pay by card and mobile wallet. With a split payment feature in your POS system, you can now divide the amount so one pays €15 in cash, one pays €45 by card and the last two pay €60 via Apple Pay. All on one bill – and without any hassle.
Why is split payment important?
In a modern restaurant or café, good service is not only about the food – it is also about making payment easy and flexible. A POS system with split payment gives your guests a better experience. At the same time your staff save time and avoid errors, because the bill can easily be adapted to different payment types without manual calculation.
