What is partial payment?

Partial payment means a customer can pay a bill in several smaller portions instead of one total amount. The guest may choose to split the amount across several payment methods, pay in several rounds, or several people may share the bill between them. In restaurants and cafés, partial payment is often used when guests eat together but want to pay separately.

Partial payment is not the same as instalment payment, where the customer pays over a longer period, often under a financing agreement. With partial payment the split usually happens during the same visit. If you want to read about the difference between the two terms, see our entry on instalment payment.

Example from a café:

A party of four has had lunch together and now wants to pay. Instead of one total bill, they want each person to pay for what they ordered. The staff use the POS system to split the order so each guest can easily see and pay their own share. Two pay by card, one chooses Google Pay and the last pays cash. The guests leave the restaurant satisfied – and the staff save time and avoid mistakes.

Why is it important to know about partial payment?

Partial payment is a feature many guests expect – especially in larger parties where people want to pay individually. A POS system that supports partial payment makes it quick and easy for staff to meet customers' wishes without spending time splitting amounts manually.

If your restaurant or café doesn't offer a flexible payment experience, it can frustrate guests and drag out the payment process. That is why it is important to know and understand partial payment, so you can give better service while optimising your staff's workflow.
